The opening sequence of I am the Night uses simple colours
in it, these being black and white. There are only small times in the opening
sequence that we see anything in great detail. There is never a part of the
sequence in which there is a full body shot. In the opening seconds we can
see a body that is in half light and half darkness. This is a recurring theme
that continues as the opening sequence goes on. The editing of the sequence uses a number of fast hard cut shots. The sequence also uses a number of slow transitions.
It is clear to see that there is a school girl in the sequence by the way she is dressed and the shoes that she wears, all of which are highlighted at a time in the sequence. Another item that is highlighted twice in the opening sequence is the Police car which can be seen driving down the road. This made me intrigued as to what this had to do with a school girl. The music also helped build a sense of wonder as to what is going to happen in the film.
The sound throughout the piece is orchestral, slowly building up to create suspense as a viewer watches. The use of violins makes the viewers wonder what is going to happen next.
Nightflyers
The opening sequence of Nightflyers depicts that the genre of this film is SciFi. This is implied through the scientific animations that have been used to show what look like electrons. After a number of transitions we are left with the end shot of what appears to be some sort of spaceship.
Although this sequence did not have any actors in it I was drawn in by the animations. These captivated me, the animations were illustrating that this film is to do with science and space. This is because there are animations of electrons, brain and nerve impulses. I was drawn in by this and wanted to know what happens in this film.
The sound that is used in the sequence is synthesised and provides an electronic and mechanical feeling that works well with the SciFi genre. This sound becomes louder as the sequence continues. The sound in this sequence helps to build a sense of intrigue and anticipation of what is to follow in the film.
The Conjuring 2
The opening sequence of The Conjuring 2 opens with choral music, a reel to reel tape recorder is then started, this is an example of diegetic sound. The sound of the reel to reel recorder working carries on during the beginning of the sequence. As the sequence progresses the credits appear over old looking photographs whilst you hear an interview taking place. A photo of a street name allows the audience to think that the movie is based on this street. There are numerous cuts to a slide projector showing different images of people and locations.
There are a number of cuts to pictures that have already been shown just years earlier. This makes us as the audience wonder what has happened in this street. As the sequence progresses there is a sound of someone transforming into a mutant. A reoccurring theme during this sequence is religious crosses. As the sequence progresses the photos start to become side by side the ones on the left are normal but the ones on the right seem to have some sort of mutation.
There are cuts to possessed dolls and other haunted items highlighting the fact that this is a horror film. Many of these are extremely quick cuts that provide subliminal images. The sequence comes to an end with a ghostly looking nun, whose face stays in the shot after everything else has faded into the darkness. Then end shot is of a row of houses that we have already seen before in the sequence this leaves you with a sense of suspense and anticipation and fear of a scary movie.
